Super Castlevania (SNES) Review

Ever since Castlevania was released on the NES back in 1987 it has seen massive success. There have been sequels, spinoffs, comics, novels, Simon Belmont was a main character on Captain N and a Netflix animated series. One of the best in the series and according to some the best Castlevania game is Super Castlevania (AKA, Castlevania 4) for the SNES.

A remake of Castlevania 1, Dracula has returned and it’s up to vampire hunter Simon Belmont to stop him.

The first thing you’ll notice once you boot up Super Castlevania is how awesome the graphics look. This game is hands down one of the best looking SNES games out there. The level designs are not just spooky but a ton of fun yo play. In fact, if you take the time to look at some of the backgrounds you’ll see stuff going on. For example, in the very first level at the very beginning, there’s a giant skull mountain in the background with bats coming out of its eye. On top of that, stage 4 has parts where the entire level moves as you’re hanging. This looks absolutely amazing.

The gameplay may be the same sidescrolling action as the first game, but they added a new twist. The whip can be hit in multiple directions which makes killing enemies above you or at an angle easier. Plus, the whip can be used as a grappling hook to grapple onto hooks that allow you to swing across platforms. These new additions are a vast improvement since killing enemies become less of a hassle. The controls are super responsive, tight and easy to use. It’s just attack, jump and secondary weapon. while that sounds too simple, games don’t need complex control schemes to be good. They just have to play well.

The music is also top-notch. This game has arguably the best version of Simon’s Theme. There’s something about this version that gives people goosebumps and excited whenever it plays in the game.

Of course, not everything is great. You still get thrown back a too far away distance when you get hit and sometimes there are unfair pitfalls. These are rare, however. Not to mention that the worst stage to have these problems is stage 3. You will have nightmares of stage 3.

Besides, words can’t convey how great this game is. Play it yourself just to see why it’s on many best video games ever lists. The gameplay is super fun with great controls, great level design and amazing music. It doesn’t matter how you get your hands on it, just get your hands on it and play it.
